James Hunter - Insurrection-Scotland's Famine Winter - 10th December, 2019 - 7pm
Ref: JH101219

When Scotland’s 1846 potato crop was wiped out by blight, the country was plunged into crisis. In the Hebrides and the West Highlands a huge relief effort came too late to prevent starvation and death. Further east, meanwhile, towns and villages from Aberdeen to Wick and Thurso, rose up in protest at the cost of the oatmeal that replaced potatoes as people’s basic foodstuff.

Those dramatic events have long been ignored or forgotten. Now, in James Hunter, they have their historian. The story he tells is, by turns, moving, anger-making and inspiring. In an era of food banks and growing poverty, it is also very timely.

Lost Moray and Nairn by Bruce B Bishop
Ref: BOOKLOSTMORAY&NAIRN
In this book Bruce B Bishop traces what has been 'lost' from the old counties of Moray and Nairn, both architecturally and socially. Packed with illustrations of places, buildings and of aspects of life which are now vanished, he demonstrates not only how the burghs of Nairn, Forres and Elgin have evolved over the centuries, but also shows how change has affected smaller towns and villages. He explores those elements which have been lost from the coastal towns, with particular emphasis on the demise of the ports of Findhorn, Nairn and Garmouth, and the more recent decline in the fishing industry.  His journey through the region takes him from prehistory to the present day, during which he examines everything from geology, architecture and agriculture to industry and communications. Lost Moray and Nairn is an important, illuminating and compelling account of this unique corner of Scotland.
